Valentine’s Day is one of those occasions that makes gift-buying especially difficult – even more so if you’re looking for a gift for your husband or boyfriend.
The stores are full of heart-shaped balloons, boxes of chocolates, red lacy lingerie, flowers – all perfect gifts for the lady in your life – but there’s slim pickings when it comes to gifts for us guys.
Thankfully the good folks over at Mr. Porter have made things simple for you, and have compiled a list of ‘Valentine’s Gifts for Him’, a list containing dozens of gifts starting at only £10. Here’s my top picks.
Tom Ford Black Orchid
Regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of Tom Ford’s fragrance line. I have bottles of both Black Orchid and Noir Extreme, as well as Tobacco Vanille from the Private Blend Collection, and regularly receive compliments on all three (it seems their longevity is far beyond anything else in my collection too – a couple of sprays at 8am are still very noticeable by 5pm.)
With notes of orchid, patchouli and black plum, Black Orchid is a spicy, dark scent – perfectly suited to a romantic evening meal. £64 for 50ml.
Sunspel Loopback Cotton-Jersey Sweatshirt
The grey sweater has been a wardrobe staple for decades, and is as versatile as it is ubiquitous. Pair it with khaki chinos and sneakers for a casual look, or with a crisp, white button down shirt for a more formal look.
Paying slightly more for wardrobe essentials is sensible, as you can be sure the sweater will look as good years down the line as it does on the first wear. Sunspel Loopback Sweater, £95.
Clinique Anti-Age Moisturiser
I’m a pretty simple guy when it comes to grooming. I don’t have a lot of time in the mornings, so I need to make every second count. The only skin product I use is moisturiser, as I find it makes a noticeable difference to both the way I look, and the way I feel.
The Clinique Anti-Age Moisturiser is packed with anti-oxidants, helps smooth out wrinkles, it’s also fragrance-free and quickly-absorbed, which means it won’t make his skin greasy or shiny. £32 for 100ml.
Polo Ralph Lauren Stretch Briefs
Much like socks, underwear is one of those purchases guys don’t pay a lot of attention to. We’re usually pretty happy to spend the bare minimum on them, because they’re not an item that gets a lot of attention when compared to, say, a shirt or pair of shoes.
But the effect a good-quality pair of underpants can have on your day is surprising. Things just…feel better. These trunks in fresh white cotton-jersey with stretch fit are a gift your man will truly appreciate each time he wears them. £40 for three pairs.
Valextra Pebble-Grain Leather Card Holder
I’m a huge fan of accessories like this; wallets, card-holders, keyrings. I think it’s one of the few opportunities a guy has to add a touch of flamboyance to his outfit. Founded in 1937, Valextra is a big name in the world of leather goods, with a reputation for minimalist and discreet designs (indeed, the only ‘branding’ on their goods is usually the ‘V’ shape, cut into the card sections.)
Exceedingly high-quality and sure to last a lifetime, this card holder is a true investment piece your man will treasure forever. £150.
Let me know your thoughts on Valentine’s Day, and if you think us guys have it a lot easier when it comes to buying gifts for our wives and girlfriends.
